The Comenius week has come to its end and our friends from Agliana have returned to their country full of experience and (we hope) with positive views for us and our country. With Agliana’s visit in Astakos, the bilateral exchanges were completed and we are looking forward to the big meeting in Astakos in May. We will be ready for them as so will be Astakos. <br />
The Italian delegation consisted of three teachers and four students. The students were hosted in families and followed the school program along with their teachers. They attended small theatrical performances, the exchanged views on the similarities between the Italian and the Greek language, they made handcrafts and they witnessed the way we teach the Roman history to our students. All these, of course, in conjunction with taking care our school garden and two small trips to the ΔΡΩ infrastructure and the Akarnanian coastline. Furthermore, our guests admired the interior of Agios Nikolaos Church and Mr. Faros’s neoclassical house with its wonderful decorations. They also visited our Town Hall and exchanged presents with the vice-mayor, Ms Samaras. The visit closed with Greek dances. We all made a big circle which symbolized the unity of all nations’ schools and students. <br />
We must thank all our friends who have made their best and we must confess that we realized what really these activities are for: To be all together as a School, students, teachers and parents. The “Benvenuti” banner is no longer hanged in our school’s balcony, but… in reality it is always there. <br />

The delegation of our school arrived without problems in Lampeter. The Greek students started participating the Welsh school's activities and attended classes in Welsh and English. They learned how to make hand creams using flowers and how to prepare Welsh cakes. They also celebrated Yannis's birthday and watched a firework show for the Guy Fawkes Night celebrations. Except for the Greek delegation, the Norwegian one has already arrived in Lampeter. Today, our Welsh friends have planned a film projection at school awaiting the students and the teachers from Italy.</div>

Our last month’s activities have been dedicated to our Comenius partnership. From May 19 to May 24, our school was visited by two Italian teachers and two students. We made four new friends: Carla, Paola, Sofia and Jennifer! They come from Porto Azzurro, a small town located on the island of Elba, very close to Corsica. They attended our school lessons for almost a week. We learned songs and dances, we planted new trees to our school garden, we went on a educational excursion to Ancient Olympia, we visited the local town hall and, generally, we had a lot of fun! Among other things, we had a unique experience of talking about our educational systems, our cultures and our common history. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
From June 5 to June 9, our school activities were attended by Anna and Isabelle, two teachers from Norway. They come from Gjerstad, a town of 2,500 habitants, located in the south of Norway. They presented their region, their school and their educational system: they gave us so many ideas! Moreover, we visited the town hall, we went swimming, and we learned songs in Greek, in English and in Norwegian. In our little excursion to Oiniades, we saw the shipsheds and the ancient theatre where we had the opportunity to talk about ancient myths and watch a small theatrical event prepared by Class C. <br />
Our Comenius activities finished for this year. We made so many new friends and we wish to see them again many times in the future. This first year was the greatest experience ever! The next step is our visit to Wales next October. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
During the Archaic and the Classical Age, the Corinthians founded a lot of colonies along the acarnanian coastline. As a result, most of these cities became members of the Peloponesean Alliance. In order to maintain a string position in commerce, the Corinthians were often mixed in the internal affairs of the Acarnanian coastal cities. It was just the chronological point that the concept of "polis" was introduced along with the corinthian currency, the "stater". Astakos was a naval-agricultural society with growing commerce and a prevalent corithian political party. During the civil war between Athens and Sparta (a.k.a. "the Peloponesean War"), the town of Astakos became known about the story of a tyrant. His name was Evarchus and was a friend of Corinth. Evarchus was expelled from the city by an athenian force but he was restored in his potition by Corinth. This action caused a new naval expedition by the Athenians, who conquered the whole region of Acarnania and forced the locals to join the Alliance of Athens. By the end of the war, Astakos became a member of the independent Acarnanian Common. During the hellenistic years the town changed side by joining Macedon, since 167 B.C. when Greece was occupied by the Romans. It was the time for the Acarnanians to become colonists by force: Nikopolis was just built.</div>

The activities of our school in the Comenius program continue vigorously and we are already awaiting the visitors from the other countries -somewhere in the mid to late May. The experience of students and teachers from the previous travels in Italy and Norway can prove themselves very useful for the future. We remind to our readers that the main purpose of the program is that the kids to cultivate, fertilize and consume their own crops. In addition to this, to gain experience through travelling across the European countries and improve their skills in English. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As a part of this program, all schools have decided to publish their activities to a specific webblog (to read it, click on "Comenius" tab at the top of the page) and then to create a logo after organising a competition among all students of the participating schools (to view all entries, <a href="http://agreenworldbeapart.blogspot.com/p/logo-competition_8678.html">click here</a>). The winning logo, <b>voted by all schools</b> is the one created by <b>Hara Poulaki</b>, a student of class E. Congratulations Hara!!!<br />

During the 8th century AD, Norway was divided into many kingdoms eventually united under King Harald the Blonde. In 1262, the Norwegians expanded to Greenland and Iceland. In 1397 the Union of Sweden, Denmark and Norway was established, also known as the "Kalmar Union". Until 1814, Denmark and Norway remained united. That year, due to its alliance with Napoleon, Norway was forced to be annexed to Sweden, which led to strong reactions by the Norse politicians. Finally, in 1905, Norway became independent. During the First World War, the country remained officially neutral, but unofficially helped the Entente. During the Second World War, Norway was occupied by Germany until 1945. Today, this country is a member of NATO and EU and has not adopted the euro.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Greek War of Independence began in 1821 and ended in 1829 with the liberation of Greece from the Ottomans. The ground was prepared by Rigas Fereos, Adamantios Koraes and the Society of Friends. During the first years of the war, the Greeks managed to liberate Central Greece and Peloponnese, but then fell into discord and the Turks managed to recapture some regions. During the last years of the war, the Egyptian Ibrahim Pasha conquered Peloponnese and west - central Greece, but his fleet was destroyed by the British, French and Russians in Navarino in 1827. After that, the Greek forces won battle after battle, managing to recapture the southern part of their country.<br />
The most important figures of the Revolution was General Theodoros Kolokotronis, the chieftains Karaiskakis, Botsaris, Androutsos, Diakos, the local leader Petrobey Mavromichalis, the admirals Andreas Miaoulis and Konstantinos Kanaris, the clergyman Papflessas, the naval commander Laskarina Bouboulina, the military man Dimitrios Ypsilantis and the politician Alexander Mavrocordatos. Also, of great importance was the figure of the philellenist George Gordon Noel, Lord of Byron, who fought in Greece and gave his life for the freedom of the country.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Greek Revolution is symbolically celebrated on March 25th.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The first inhabitants of the ancient settlement was the Cephallenians, a people who lived on the "kefalai" (= head, top) of the Akarnanika mountains. Their territory extended from the coastal zone of Acarnania to the islands of Lefkas, Ithaca and Kefalonia. During the pre-Hellenic period, these men probably set up some settlements around the coastline of the Gulf which later were unifed into a new settlement under the name "Astakos". </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
During the Trojan War the entire area was under the scepter of King Odysseus of Ithaca, whose territory also included the Acarnanian coastline. The main settlement of this period was located probably at the bay of Platygiali, where a small town was discovered during the 1980's. The inhabitats of all these small settlements decided to get unified and to found a new and safer town. This archaic and classic Astakos grew to a large town in which was built the ancient temple of Zeus Karaus. "Kara" means "head" (such as "kefalai"), so this name possibly indicates the population's ancient origins from the Cephallenians. More likely though is that the name "Karaus" comes from the ancient people named "Kares", who lived in the Greek mainland. Besides, Zeus Karaus was worshiped also in the Boeotian territory, the land in which the Kares had lived before they colonize Asia Minor, under the pressure of the Dorians.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
Homer was the author of "Odyssey", in which Odysseus (a.k.a. "Ulysses"), King of Ithaca, was trying to return to his homeland after the ten-year Trojan War.<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

"Astakos" means "Lobster"! </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There are many myths and local beliefs which claim that the cave of the Cyclops Polyphemus is near the Byzantine castle. It is said that the large rocks beneath the castle are the stones thrown by the Cyclops to Odysseus. However, this opinion must be rejected as excessive. Some historians believe that the name comes from the mythological son of the ancient god Poseidon but this is also an excessive opinion. The view closest to the truth is that the town got its name from the abundance of lobsters in its waters. Besides, the name "Astakos" means "Lobster", is pre-Hellenic, perhaps Illyrian, and its roots are lost in time.<br />

"Astakos" significa "Aragosta"!</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
There are a lot of opinions about the etymology of the word "Europe". The most prevalent of these claims is that the word is Greek: from the words "ευρύς" (evris) = broad and "όψη" (opsi) = appearance, it means something wide. This word was used by the old inhabitants of Peloponnese and the islands to define the areas beyond their own place, northern Greece and the Balkans. Much later the term "Europe" expanded across the continent.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In the Greek Mythology there is the myth of Zeus and Europe. Europe was a beautiful girl, daughter of the king of Phoenicia. When Dias (Zeus), the father of gods and men, saw her, he immediately fell in love. To approach her, he was transformed into a bull grazing in a meadow near the place where Europe was playing with her friends. When she approached the bull to caress him, he put her on his back and flew up into the sky of Greece. Later, her brother, Cadmus came to Greece in order to find his sister, , where eventually he founded a city and named it Thebes. It is worth noting that from the name "Dias" (Zeus) comes the latin name "deus" = god, from the word "deus" (=god, Dias) comes the name "Deutsche" (Teuton, German, "man of God).</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">

According to one version of the Greek story, Medusa was once a lovely young girl who had a boyfriend she loved very much. One afternoon she and her boyfriend were looking for a place where they could be alone, and they went into a temple of the goddess Athena. Seeing that nobody else was there, they sat down to talk, and soon they started to kiss. Athena, looking down from the sky, saw Medusa kissing her boyfriend, and Athena was very angry that they would use her temple this way. Athena made Medusa grow very ugly, and have snakes instead of hair Medusa's boyfriend ran away, frightened. After that Medusa went away from other people and hid herself, and she lived with her sisters (who had also gotten ugly) for many years. They were so ugly that if you looked at them you would turn into a stone statue!</div>
