The October 28th is a historic anniversary for Greece. In the morning of October 28, 1940 the Italian ambassador in Athens sent an ultimatum to the Greek government demanding the sovereignty of the country. Greece's dictator Ioannis Metaxas refused and that was the beginning of the war with Italy. While everyone in Europe was expecting a crushing defeat of the Greeks, they managed to repel the Italian invasion and liberate the Greek cities of Northern Epirus. The British Prime Minister Winston Churchill said that "Hence we will not say that Greeks fight like heroes, but that heroes fight like Greeks." Since then, October 28 is celebrated in Greek schools with poems and songs followed by student and military parade.
Il 28 di Ottobre è un anniversario molto importante per la Grecia. Nel matino di quello giorno a 1940, il Console Italiano ad Atene erogò un ultimatum al Primo Ministro della Grecia domandando la dominazione del nostro paese. Il dittatore Ioannis Metaxas buttò la proposta e questo fu l' inizio della guerra. Mentre tutta l' Εuropa aspettava una sconfitta greca ultimativa, i soldati Greci ce l' hanno fatto respingere l' esercito italiano e liberare le città greche a Epirus di Nord. Il Primo Ministro di Regno Unito, Winston Churchill disse: " Da quinzi innanzi non diciamo che i Greci combattano come eroi ma che i eroi combattano come i Greci". Dacchè, il 28 di Ottobre si festeggia nelle scuole greche con odi e canzoni accompagnati da sfilate studentesce e militarie.
