Reading flags and banners; Italy - Leggere bandiere e vessili: Italia

Il Tricolore
The Italian flag has three vertical bands; one of green, one of white and one of red. Its design is based on the design of the "tricolor" flag of the French Revolution. It is called "Il Tricolore". The green colour represents hope, the white represents peace and the red represents bravery. Another meaning of the colours is green for the countrysides, white for the mountains and red for the bloody wars of independence. Historians claim that these colours come from the historical flag of Milan combined with the green colour of the local military uniform. Today, the flag of Italy is the pride of the "Belpaese", as the Italians call their country.
