ASTAKOS, OUR HOMETOWN

Astakos (means: lobster) is a coastal town of Aetoloakarnania in west Greece and the seat of the Municipality of Astakos. His population is circa 3000 people. It is 45 km away from both Messolongi and Agrinio. From his small harbour you can travel to Ithaca and Cephalonia.

The historical roots of Astakos are found in Ancient Greece, but in medieval years the neighbouring town called Dragameston became more known. Astakos functioned as the harbour of Dragameston. Nowadays, you can admire the remains of an ancient temple, dedicated to Zeus.
In later years, its population prospered mainly because of acorn trade and built a beautiful settlement full of neoclassical buildings which adorn the city centre up to now. The picturesque district "Chovolio" and Saint George Monastery are also beautiful and worthseeing.
In the past few years a lot of hope for economic growth was invested in the new harbour of the town called Platygiali but nothing has been done yet by the Greek State. In summertime the beach is full of people who enjoy the clear sea and the traditional products, especially the fine wine.

Astakos (significa: aragosta) è una città nella costiera di Aetoloakarnania in Grecia Occidentale, la sede del Comune di Xiromero. La popolazione è circa 3000 abitanti. Astakos si tratta di 45 km da entrambi il Mesolonghi e l' Agrinio. Dal suo porto si può viaggiare a Itaca e Cephalonia.

Le radici storiche di Astakos si trovano nella Grecia antica. Si può ammirare le rovine di un tempio antico di Giove. Nel Medioevo la città vicina chiamata 'Dragomestre' diventò più conosciuto. Astakos funzionò come il porto di Dragomestre.

Negli anni successivi, la popolazione prosperò soprattuto dal mercato della quercia e nel novecento fu creato un insediamento belissimo pieno di palazzi neoclassici che abbeliscono il centro della città fino ad ora. Il quartiere pittoresco 'Chovolio' e il convento di San Giorgio sono anche belle vedute per i turisti che vengono soppratutto nel agosto.Negli ultimi anni la speranza per una ripresa economica si investisce sul nuovo porto della città chiamato 'Platygiali' ma nulla è fatto ancora dallo Stato. In estate la spiaggia è piena di turisti che amano il mare pulito e i prodotti tradizonali, come il buon vino.
