During the 8th century AD, Norway was divided into many kingdoms eventually united under King Harald the Blonde. In 1262, the Norwegians expanded to Greenland and Iceland. In 1397 the Union of Sweden, Denmark and Norway was established, also known as the "Kalmar Union". Until 1814, Denmark and Norway remained united. That year, due to its alliance with Napoleon, Norway was forced to be annexed to Sweden, which led to strong reactions by the Norse politicians. Finally, in 1905, Norway became independent. During the First World War, the country remained officially neutral, but unofficially helped the Entente. During the Second World War, Norway was occupied by Germany until 1945. Today, this country is a member of NATO and EU and has not adopted the euro.
